COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Bubber Adams, a longtime coach and mentor at Stratford Academy, passed away this week—his service was held Tuesday at Macon Memorial Park Cemetery. Many former players and colleagues remembered his nearly five decades of dedication to local sports.  The Macon Melody
  • Alice's Place Adult Day Health is hosting the Boots on the Ground Fall Festival today — the event will offer food, games, entertainment and community vendors with groups like the Middle Georgia Food Bank, Atlanta Postal Credit Union and Swift Labs participating. The festival is sponsored by the center staff in partnership with Making Ways for the Elderly nonprofit and is open to all community members.  41 WMGT
  • This weekend in Middle Georgia residents will enjoy a range of events—family festivals, live music and Halloween fun—that run from today to October 26 across Macon, Eatonton and nearby towns. Highlights include the Central Georgia Greek Festival, Oc-TOBO-Fest and other free or low-cost gatherings offering activities for all ages.  Middle Georgia Times
  • The Fox City Witches Ride will return to downtown Forsyth tomorrow, October 25 at 5:30 p.m. to help United in Pink, a nonprofit that supports breast cancer survivors and their families. The event starts at The Den at 84 E. Johnston Street with registration at 5 p.m.—participants will take a half-mile, witch-themed walk through the historic district followed by an afterparty with food trucks, a live DJ, costume contests, and raffle prizes.  41 WMGT
  • At Macon’s International Cherry Blossom Festival, a family enjoyed sunshine and pink blooms while Executive Editor Joshua Wilson noted that small acts of care—like sharing casseroles and clearing fallen trees—build trust and keep the community strong.  The Macon Melody

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Middle Georgia State University enrolled 8,828 students this fall—a record high from last year's 8,409 across its central campuses. University officials said the school increased nontraditional and transfer enrollments and added new classes in education and nursing to secure more state funding.  The Macon Melody
  • William S. Hutchings College & Career Academy held a Toque Ceremony for 51 first year culinary arts students to mark earning their ServSafe Manager Certification—an achievement noted by Chef Mark Robinson as a rare first-time success that lets them start daily kitchen work and dive into advanced cooking techniques. The ceremony honored students who spent time learning food safety, hygiene, and knife skills before moving into more complex culinary training.  41 WMGT

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • The latest U.S. Drought Monitor shows nearly all of Georgia is now in drought, with every part of Middle Georgia facing moderate drought and counties like Upson, Taylor, Crisp, and Johnson experiencing severe conditions. Light rain is forecast next week—experts warn it will not end the drought, and conditions are expected to worsen.  WGXA

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • More than 687,000 Georgia households risk losing SNAP benefits if the federal shutdown continues—officials say the USDA lacks funds for November payments and local food banks are seeing higher demand. The Department of Human Services will update clients when payment disruptions occur.  41 WMGT

HEALTH NEWS

  • On Oct 20, the Macon-Bibb County Health Department suspended the food service permits of 20 eateries for overdue fees dating back to 2020—businesses such as Dairy Queen at 4700 Hartley Bridge Road owed $1,307 and received notices warning that late fees will be added if payments are not made by Dec. 31. The department delivered these notices in person and by mail and will review a proposed payment plan for those in financial hardship.  The Macon Newsroom

  • Patty and Ed Hufnagle’s offer on their forever home in Perry is on hold because the mortgage company will not finance their loan as Ed is furloughed during the four-week federal shutdown — the lender is holding the property while the couple waits for the shutdown to end.  13WMAZ
