CULTURE NEWS

  • Ed Grisamore has launched a trivia challenge that asks Macon residents to match current businesses with their former roles (for example, Mercer University School of Law once housed an insurance company office). The list features 16 locations (including a former Krispy Kreme that became Goodwill Donation Center) and invites locals to test their history knowledge.  The Macon Melody
  • Textile artist Wini McQueen will debut her Quilt of Names on Oct. 31 and Nov. 1 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Oak Ridge Cemetery — a 12-by-12-foot mixed-media artwork that honors names lost during slavery and features daily programs with music and historical insights.  The Macon Melody

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Macon-Bibb County Fire Department welcomed 23 new firefighters — 21 men and two women — at Rock Springs Baptist Church today after 12 weeks of training. Fire Chief Shane Edwards said flexible schedules and higher starting pay are easing staffing shortages while another group is expected in the spring.  41 WMGT

  • Isaac Lightfoot, a retired teacher once known as Heavy Foot for weighing over 500 pounds, has lost much weight and now weighs 264 pounds by following a diet plan and walking daily—he shares his journey with motivational messages and plans to write a book as he will turn 75 in December.  The Macon Melody

SPORTS NEWS

  • Westside won a tight 16—14 game against Rutland in a GHSA region matchup in Macon. Rutland nearly came back from a 16—0 hole, but a late fumble recovery helped secure the win for the Seminoles.  The Macon Melody
  • The Warner Robins 1976 football team will be inducted into the hall of fame in an upcoming ceremony. The honor recognizes the team's significant on-field contributions — a milestone that celebrates their historic impact.  13WMAZ
  • Friday night high school football ended with Jefferson County winning 14—13 over East Laurens, Dublin winning 54—0 over Central, Washington County beating Southwest 28—14, and Sumter County defeating Hardaway 63—0; several teams will play soon in match-ups like Dodge County against Northeast that may affect playoff seeding.  13WMAZ
  • The John Milledge Trojans played their final regular season game in The End Zone against the Mount de Sales Cavaliers — the Trojans had won five straight with John Milledge averaging 37.5 points per game while the Cavaliers had suffered a 49-3 loss in their previous game.  41 WMGT
  • The Bleckley County Royals traveled to Macon on Friday night to face the ACE Gryphons at Perkins Field. Last season, the Royals lost (29 to 28 in overtime) while the Gryphons came off a win after three losses.  41 WMGT
