COMMUNITY NEWS

  • A Macon woman said that an overflowing toilet and tub gurgling with sewer waste at Walnut Creek Apartments caused her distress while she recovers from knee surgery—she reported the issue to code enforcement and local officials, and property management said repairs are underway.  WGXA
  • Downtown Macon will sparkle with over one million Christmas lights as the annual display now stretches over more than five blocks. The free event opens with the Macon Pops Christmas Spectacular on Nov. 28 at 6 p.m. — Bryan Nichols designed the celebration to boost downtown growth.  WGXA
  • Cleanup crews organized by Keep Macon-Bibb Beautiful will clear illegal dump sites and litter near five public schools in southwest Macon starting at 8:30 a.m. Saturday, November 15—coordinated with District 8 Commissioner Donice Bryant to help improve school routes.  The Macon Newsroom
  • The 11th annual Turkey Giveaway will take place on November 22 at noon in the parking lot of Overtyme Bar & Grille in Macon — 500 turkeys, collard greens and drinks will be provided to families in need until supplies run out.  41 WMGT

EDUCATION NEWS

  • There are only 31 women’s colleges left in the U.S.—Georgia still has four, including Wesleyan College in Macon, Spelman College, Brenau University, and Agnes Scott College. Wesleyan keeps its long history alive with a diverse student body while Spelman remains focused on empowering Black women in STEM.  The Macon Newsroom
  • Heritage Elementary has launched its Meals-in-a-Bag drive to help students and families fight hunger during the shutdown—providing warm, ready meals while the school is closed. The program will support those in need until regular classes resume.  13WMAZ

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Macon Water Authority said tap water tasted dirt-like due to an aging reservoir growing algae + heavy hydrant use shaking loose a harmless slime inside pipes after about 60 complaints. The authority tested samples from nearby hydrants and said it will install carbon filters + take further steps to improve water taste.  The Macon Melody

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Macon-Bibb County Industrial Authority released its fiscal year 2025 report on November 12 and showed record growth with announcements like Embraer’s recommitment, Irving Consumer Products’ 600 million expansion, and YKK marking 50 years (the report notes 30 active projects with $4.6 billion in potential investment) and an increased local PILOT Program ($18 million reinvested since 2017).  Middle Georgia Times
  • Macon-Bibb County will soon honor the first five African American city council members with an official proclamation. Mayor Lester Miller is scheduled to read the proclamation on Dec. 12 at 10 a.m. at City Hall — a luncheon will follow at noon at the Tubman Museum in Downtown Macon.  WPGA News
