COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Peach County families can get extra holiday support at FANHAM Charities’ 5th annual toy drive, which provides toys to children in need. The event is set for Dec. 20 from 1 to 3 p.m. at Allen Temple A.M.E. Church Gym, 1235 Jones Road in Byron.  41 WMGT

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Traffic signals are out at the intersection of Shurling Drive and Millerfield Road after a crash Wednesday afternoon, with temporary stop signs installed & a new signal pole ordered as repairs continue.  41 WMGT

CULTURE NEWS

  • Sweet Eleanor’s Dessert Shop in downtown Macon, named for owner Scott Mitchell’s late grandmother, has served desserts and coffee since Nov. 1 and features a mural by local artist Kevin (Scene) Lewis. The shop will soon expand its menu to include soups and sandwiches for busy locals.  The Macon Melody
  • Susan Welsh is leaving the Museum of Arts and Sciences this month after 13 years of leadership to focus on her art appraisal business - her departure signals a new chapter with Jim Greenhouse set to become executive director in early January.  The Macon Melody

ECONOMY NEWS

  • The Powerball jackpot reached $1.2 billion and a local gas station sold a $50,000 winning ticket during the Dec. 13 drawing, showing that big prizes can come from right here. Tickets cost $2 with the option to add a $1 Power Play and drawings are held Monday, Wednesday and Saturday at 11:00 p.m. ET.  41 WMGT

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Stratford Academy teacher Bill Reynolds brightened the day of fourth-grader Cole Blight (hospitalized for medical challenges) with a kind gesture that lifted his spirits.  13WMAZ
  • Perry High School's marching band will perform nationally at the New Orleans Sugar Bowl after a year of fundraising. The band will march in the Dec. 31 parade at 2:00 p.m. and compete on New Year's Day at 3:00 p.m. — the only band from the area representing the Peach State.  WGXA

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • A Macon driver says exit 167 on I-75 near QuikTrip remains risky due to poor visibility and simultaneous turns, and GDOT explained that local officials must request a traffic study (if needed) before any adjustments are made.  13WMAZ
  • The Jones County Sheriff’s Office launched its Second Chance Employers List today to connect local employers with job seekers who have criminal records and help reduce repeat offenses – several businesses, including Middle Georgia Staffing Solutions, have already signed up and employers can register on the website.  41 WMGT
  • The Macon Judicial Circuit DA’s office launched Project P.A.U.S.E., a pedestrian safety program funded by a $211,000 grant from the Governor's Office of Highway Safety. The project will run from Dec. 1 through Sept. 30 and aims to teach children and families safe walking habits in busy areas.  41 WMGT

HEALTH NEWS

  • Grief counselor Franchetta Trawick says the holidays may feel heavier for those mourning, and Piedmont Macon offers grief support services. The 2026 Evening Grief Support Group will meet from 4 to 6 p.m. on the third Thursday each month (with November and December dates adjusted) to help community members cope.  41 WMGT
