CULTURE NEWS

  • The 44th International Cherry Blossom Festival runs from Friday, Mar. 20 to Sunday, Mar. 29 in Macon, featuring over 300,000 Yoshino cherry trees and events such as nightly concerts, circus acts & fireworks at Carolyn Crayton Park with additional activities downtown.  Middle Georgia Times
  • We Built This City 2026 will take place at The Piedmont Grand Opera House from Wednesday, Feb. 4 to Saturday, Feb. 7 — featuring comedy, singing, news, dancing, and acting to raise funds for local charities. Tickets range from $19 to $50 and can be purchased on the Macon Civic Club website.  Middle Georgia Times
  • Middle Georgia Lit Fest 2026 in Warner Robins will welcome authors, poets, illustrators and publishers for a literary celebration that builds on a tradition since 2017. The event will offer local and regional creatives a chance to connect and celebrate literature.  Middle Georgia Times

EDUCATION NEWS

  • 106 children graduated Monday morning from the R.I.S.E. Initiative that helps kids overcome trauma by providing therapy and mentorship (individualized plans support each student's growth). District Attorney Anita Howard said the program gives these graduates the tools needed for a bright future.  WGXA
  • Once a stray, Sammie now serves as Roberts Academy’s therapy dog and helps students with dyslexia feel calmer and more welcome during class.  13WMAZ

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Georgia regulators approved a $16 billion Georgia Power expansion to add nearly 10 gigawatts from natural gas, solar, battery storage, and power purchase agreements—protecting customer bills through cost caps and rate freezes while officials monitor demand for data centers.  13WMAZ
  • Tucker Road in north Macon will close at 8 a.m. Friday, Jan. 16 for up to 90 days as GDOT starts bridge reconstruction over Rocky Creek between Foster and Peake Roads; drivers should follow detour signs during this work, which is set to finish in January 2027.  41 WMGT

HEALTH NEWS

  • Piedmont Macon is seeing a rise in flu cases as a nurse practitioner advises residents to wear masks, wash hands, and stay hydrated during holiday gatherings; the hospital has more flu A cases (with added nausea) and reminds groups at risk to take precautions as the season runs through May.  WPGA News
