COMMUNITY NEWS

  • A local photographer and videographer will host a free networking event tomorrow from 4 to 7 p.m. at 1410 Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd in downtown Macon — open to local creatives and featuring a panel discussion — to help them connect and learn together. Organizer Devoris Gordon said the panel discussion — a forum for sharing industry tips — will offer attendees professional insights to grow their skills.  41 WMGT

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Armstrong announced on April 25 that Aubrey VanHorn—Assistant Plant Manager at its largest ceiling manufacturing plant in Macon—was named a 2025 Women MAKE Awards honoree after receiving the award at a gala on April 24 in Washington, D.C. She is recognized for her leadership in sustainability efforts and mentoring new female leaders in manufacturing.  Middle Georgia Times
  • Macon native Stebin Horne is the president and founder of African Charcoal Company who invented the Kudu grill using sustainably sourced wood from Africa to produce eco-friendly charcoal. His product is sold at Salt Lick and Ace Hardware and is certified by the Forestry Stewardship Council — a move that shows business and conservation can work together.  The Macon Melody

CULTURE NEWS

  • Today, the annual Pan-African Festival is underway at the Tubman Museum in Macon as it marks its 29th year of celebrating African heritage. The festival focuses on Uganda this year, with the Ugandan ambassador visiting and a full-weekend of music, food, and cultural events.  WGXA

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Mercer University announced on Friday that President William Underwood is stepping down while he will continue at the university as a law professor. Underwood led the college since 2006 by growing enrollment and helping to revitalize downtown Macon, and the board has begun the search for his successor.  13WMAZ
  • Twiggs County High School's Air Force Junior ROTC cadets launched their first-ever food drive + the effort gathered significant food donations for local families.  13WMAZ
  • Backpack Buddies Ministries—led for 14 years by Brenda Lambert—feeds over 3,000 underserved students each week in Bibb, Monroe and Twiggs counties by delivering bags with milk, cereal and fruit cups to ensure weekend meals using 75 to 100 volunteers.  WGXA
  • Alayah Miles, a second grader at Matilda Hartley Elementary, won first place in the state contest Young Georgia Authors with her book The Magic Pencil on Friday. A district literacy coach said this is the school's first state win in 20 years— a milestone for creative writing.  WGXA

SPORTS NEWS

  • Local umpire Michael Stewart — who overcame a tough childhood in Detroit thanks to sports — works as a social worker at the Department of Child and Family Services while umpiring baseball and softball games to guide local youth.
