COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Jeffrey Hughdahl, Ph.D. rides his bike daily on a 30-minute commute to Mercer University with only a few bike lanes available—even after a 2020 accident—while BikeWalk Macon, led by Rachel Umana, has added over 12 miles of bike lanes and is working to change local road policies to boost safer routes for bikers and pedestrians.   • The Frank Johnson Recreation Center in Macon is getting major renovations (using $2 million from SPLOST) that will add new pools, playgrounds, a remodeled baseball field, a new tennis court and weight room. The center will reopen in September (as confirmed by local officials).  41 WMGT

  • A fire has been seen on a 13WMAZ skycam in Macon-Bibb County today—officials are working to learn more about the situation.  13WMAZ

CRIME NEWS

  • Ronnie Atkinson of Ronnie Atkinson Logging was indicted last Wednesday for conspiracy to commit bank fraud and aggravated identity theft after allegedly working with a high-ranking Morris Bank employee in Gray to secure 57 fraudulent loans totaling over $3 million—federal prosecutors say the scheme involved using false documents and straw borrowers.  13WMAZ

CULTURE NEWS

  • In 1949 a landscaping error at the Fickling family home led to the planting of cherry blossom trees that have since become a cultural symbol for Macon—bringing in $8 million a year and a growing festival. The Fickling Foundation now works with the National Arboretum to develop a hybrid that better suits Macon's heat.  13WMAZ

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Stratford senior Kaitlyn Epps won an Excellence in Journalism award and will graduate on May 17 before heading to Auburn University to study journalism after working on her senior project at The Melody newsroom. At a journalism event at the University of Georgia she met creative director Eric Baker—who has many years at Universal Creative and Disney World—and learned valuable lessons for her future career.  The Macon Melody
  • Teacher salaries differ widely as a first-year teacher with a bachelor’s degree earns $45,753 in Bibb County, $60,000 in Dekalb County and $48,309 in Clarke County—raising concerns about keeping teachers. Districts with more funds offer extra pay to attract and retain educators.  The Macon Newsroom

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Macon-Bibb County is still waiting for a $500,000 federal grant under the Inflation Reduction Act to pay for a full urban design plan for Pleasant Hill (a neighborhood split by I-75), and county officials said without the funds, further improvements will be delayed.  The Macon Newsroom
